A user journey is the study and diagram of the steps and experiences that a user executes or perceives in order to perform a specific task or journey.

User Journey (UJ) Explained

A UJ Diagram describes the steps that different users take to complete a specific task within a system, application, or website. This methodology shows the user’s workflow with a high level of detail and quickly shows where a workflow can be improved. The result of examining the various tasks can be documented. In this case, the document is called User Journey Map because it maps the various interactions the user has with a system

This technique is focused on the user, their perceptions and interactions. This is fundamentally different from a very similar web design user research technique known as “click path”. In this case, it’s just a simple list of text URLs that a user follows when going through a particular journey
